“Newport History Bytes: 50 Fast Facts” & Seabury Shoes

December 3, 2014

History Bytes BookThe Newport Historical Society holds a world-class collection with items dating from the colonial era through the modern day. This past year the Society created two new products directly relating to its collection, a book and reproduction shoes, and both are available for purchase during this holiday season.

In 2011 the Historical Society began publishing the blog History Bytes which offers tidbits of information connecting Newport’s history to popular culture, current events or American history at large. The Society selected fifty of the most popular blog entries to create the book Newport History Bytes: 50 Fast Facts. “This book is easy and entertaining to read, and makes a quick reference for those wanting to learn more about Newport’s unique history and its connections to the wider world,” explains NHS Executive Director Ruth Taylor. The book retails for $14.95; it is available for purchase online (ShopNewportHistory.com) and at the Brick Market: Museum & Shop located at 127 Thames Street, Newport, RI.

Earlier this year the Historical Society partnered with the historical shoe manufacturer American Duchess to reproduce a pair of Edwardian-era shoes. Named “Seabury,” the shoes are closely modeled after an early 20th century pair in the NHS collection and feature a Louis-style heel, silk brocade and a clip-on bow. The shoe is available in dove gray and black, and is the second in the American Duchess’s exclusive Signature line. They retail for $170 and are available for purchase online at American-Duchess.com; sample sizes will be available at the Brick Market Museum & Shop in mid-December for those wishing to try them on before ordering. A portion of the sales from each pair supports the NHS.

“We are excited about these shoes,” Taylor states. “They are the first in a line of products we are developing that are inspired by our collection. While created as desirable items for sale, they are also another way to inform the public, both locally and internationally, about our holdings and the resources we offer.”
