Newport’s Colony House has been a seat of government, a barracks, a hospital, courthouse and the location for a Steven Spielberg film. The Newport Historical Society has invited Steve Guglielmo, project architect for the recent restoration, to present Secrets of the Colony House Revealed, a behind-the-scenes tour and an inside-the-walls look at the many phases of the project, on Thursday June 26, 2014 at 3PM.

Secrets of the Colony House Revealed includes images of the work in progress and a walk through of areas not usually open to visitors. Steve will discuss the unique challenges and discoveries encountered during interior and exterior work.

From the July 1776 reading of the Declaration of Independence to the1997 filming of the movie Amistad, the Colony House has long been the scene of important local and national events. Built in 1739 to house colonial government, this restoration of the building has revealed many secrets. Hidden objects, such as a pair of 19th century shoes concealed beneath floorboards and an ancient clay pipe tucked away in the attic, tell us much about the people who have passed through its doors and the life of this important Newport landmark.

Steven Guglielmo, Principal with Saccoccio & Associates Architects, has over twenty five years of experience in architectural design. He has directed numerous building projects, including the Cranston Police Headquarters and North Kingstown High School, and serves as board chair of the Cranston YMCA.

Space is limited to 25 participants, reservations required. 401-841-8770.
