History Bytes: Here Come the Eastons

May 1, 2014

On 1 May 1639, the Easton family arrived in Newport by boat from Portsmouth, RI. Peter Easton scribbled “we came to Newport” in the margin of his copy of New-England’s Memorial (1669) by Nathaniel Morton (in the collections of the Redwood Library and Athenaeum). It was one of several paper trails left by Peter Easton during his time in America. The Easton family, from Romsey, Hampshire and Ipswich, MA, included founder Nicholas Easton, his second wife Christian Cooper Beecher and two sons Peter and John. Nicholas Easton’s third wife, Ann Clayton, later married founder Henry Bull and gave Newport’s Point neighborhood to the Quakers.
