History Bytes: Aristocratic Marriages

February 27, 2014

In the Season Four finale of Downton Abbey, Martha Levinson extended an invitation one of the characters to visit her Bellevue Avenue cottage.

During the Gilded Age, there were scores of marriages between American heiresses and British peers, with Newport as a summer destination. One such marriage was between William Watts Sherman’s daughter Mildred Constance and Ralph Francis Julius Stonor, 5th Baron Camoys on 25 November 1911. In 2006 Lord Camoys hosted an exhibit celebrating the American Sherman and Brown families at Stonor Park in Oxfordshire, home to the Stonor family since 1383.
