The Newport Historical Society and the Martin Luther King Center have joined forces to host a concert by the Tufts University Third Day Gospel Choir during the 2014 Newport Winter Festival on Monday, February 17, 2014 at 1pm.
The Third Day Gospel Choir, the gospel ensemble Confirmation and Director David Coleman will present a concert of traditional and contemporary gospel music in the historic Casino Theatre. This spiritual, historically African-American music transcends differences and unites all people to share in the celebration of music and the victory of life over tribulation. The concert highlights the history and journey of gospel music – with singing, clapping and moving. The choir will interact with the audience making it a great performance for those experiencing gospel music for the first time.
The Tufts University Third Day Gospel Choir is one of several ensembles that are part of the Tufts University Music Department. For the students and for the community, the ensemble is dynamic, educational, spiritually uplifting and barrier-breaking as it unites people from different cultures and faith together in harmony. Under the direction of David Coleman, the choir studies the origin of African-American worship music and the current trends of contemporary Gospel Music. “Through this experience, known as gospel choral music, we come together to combine our individual struggles and present our worship together through those struggles” Coleman explains. In 2010, the director and the choir were featured on BBC World News America in a story called “A Choir of Many Faiths.”
The concert takes place at the Casino Theatre, 9 Freebody Street, Newport, RI. Tickets cost $15 per person; $10 for children, Newport Historical Society members, Salve Regina University students and active duty military. This program is presented by the Newport Historical Society and the Martin Luther King Center, in partnership with the Spectacle of Toleration. The Spectacle of Toleration seeks to explore the religious and cultural traditions that thrived in early Newport as a result of the city’s commitment to religious toleration. All proceeds from ticket sales support the Martin Luther King Center and the Historical Society.
