As part of Newport’s 375th anniversary celebration, Victoria Johnson will highlight the city’s people of color. Primarily focusing on the years 1940 to 2000, the individuals highlighted in her talk have reached successful career goals and made a difference in the lives of Newport residents. Additionally African Americans First brings the past to the future spanning 300 years in the lives of Africans and African Americans on Aquidneck Island. The past enabled those of the future to become African American First in the City of Newport.

Victoria Johnson, presently serving on the Board of Directors of the Newport Historical Society, was born and raised in Newport, attended Newport Public Schools and served as the principal of Rogers High School from 1997 to 2003.
